Organization within the home: How I keep my room organized.
Tips for a Clutter-Free, Peaceful Space
A tidy room can feel like an instant breath of fresh air, but maintaining an organized space often feels like a never-ending task. The good news is, keeping your room organized doesn’t have to be overwhelming! With a few simple strategies, you can create a peaceful, clutter-free environment that’s easy to maintain. Below are some tips to help you keep your room organized and feeling calm:
1. Start with a Declutter
First you need to take the time to declutter! I understand this is why many people never start. Take some time to go through everything in your room—clothes, books, papers, or random items—and decide what you actually need. Anything that’s broken, no longer useful, or simply taking up space can go (those jeans from your early twenties that you say you will fit in again someday). Donate items in good condition or sell items on Facebook marketplace, recycle papers, and toss anything that’s just taking up space.
Pro tip: Do not save anything that you would not use again right now. If you cannot find a reason for the item on object it is time to throw/give it away. Do it now, not later.
2. Create Designated Spaces
One of the main causes of clutter is not having a proper place for everything. When things don’t have a “home,” they end up piled up in corners or on your bed. Create designated spots for your most frequently used items—your clothes, books, gadgets, and accessories. You can do this by using storage bins, baskets, or shelves for organizing smaller items like makeup, chargers, or stationery. Invest in furniture with built-in storage like a bed with drawers' underneath or a stylish ottoman that doubles as storage. I actually just bought one of these second hand for when I move but I will link a similar one that I like on here. Maximize closet space with hangers, and make sure all the hangers are the same because clothing will fit properly and will not look tacky in your closet. By giving everything a place, you make it easier to put things away and keep the clutter at bay.
3. Make Your Bed Every Morning
This might seem like a small task, but making your bed every day instantly makes your room look tidier and more put together. It’s a simple step that creates the foundation for an organized room, and it’s easy to incorporate into your routine. It only takes five minutes, but it is definitely something I still struggle with. I usually do not let myself leave the room in the morning until I have made my bed. Plus, it makes the space feel more inviting when you return home at the end of the day.
4. Organize by Category
Instead of just throwing everything into drawers or bins, try organizing your items by category. For example:
Clothing: Sort by type (shirts, pants, dresses) or by season (summer and winter clothes). Depending on the type of item of clothing whether it be formal, semi formal, dress casual, or casual depends on how I organize my clothing. I can do a video on Instagram if you would like me to go more in depth.
Books: I arrange my books by size and genre.
Accessories: Keep jewelry, hats, and scarves neatly organized. I will link the items I use in my shopping section so you all can check them out.
When things are categorized, it’s easier to find what you need, and your room will feel more cohesive.
5. Keep Flat Surfaces Clear
Flat surfaces like desks, nightstands, and dressers tend to collect random items—coffee cups, mail, makeup, etc. Keeping these areas clear is key to maintaining an organized room. Aim to clean these surfaces at the end of each day or every few days, depending on how busy you are.
Tip: Limit the number of items on these surfaces. If you need to keep a few personal items, such as a lamp or a framed photo, maybe a book, keep the rest to a minimum. My advice is to use the phrase “don't put it down, put it away” and you will notice a change in your space.
